All around the world – in France, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States – Facebook users are outraged that the social network has exposed, to all their friends, their private messages from years ago.
Facebook profile pages are now formatted in “timelines” that stretch back to when a user first joined the network. These users say that their friends are able to scroll back to the early parts of these Timelines and see what were once private messages.
One friend of mine, knowing that I’m a journalist who covers Facebook, IM’d me yesterday to say: “Why is there not more uproar about the FB private message thing?”
“They have definitely put private messages on timeline. It’s really f—-ed. Me and my roommate both found a ton last night from a few years ago. I don’t care what they say about settings. Its not cool.”
The fact is, however, this glitch does not exist.
Facebook has debunked it several times to several media outlets.
We believe Facebook. Facebook is a public company now, and a catastrophic glitch like this would be a material issue if it were real, so the company would face all sorts of lawsuits if it were lying.
What seems to be going on here is that Facebook users going through their timelines cannot believe that they, in the past, said certain things in public.
They are having a digital hangover from their wanton youth. There is research out there that shows 28 percent of teens using Facebook don’t bother to make anything they put on their walls private. Just like they do not understand mortality – their brains are literally chemically imbalanced in this way – young people do not understand why it’s a good idea to be private. They are solipsistic.
You might think this is good news for Facebook, that this glitch does not exist.
It is not.
It’s terrible news.
If the glitch did exist, Facebook could simply write some code, stop the immediate issue, and deal with the PR mess.
But you can’t fix a problem that doesn’t exist.
So Facebook is dealing with a PR mess without being able to stop the activity that is causing it – because the activity that is causing it is nothing that users didn’t originally happily do themselves.
Meanwhile, the outrage is real, even if the problem is not.
Perception is reality, and Facebook users perceive that Facebook is screwing them over.
Facebook has a global problem on its hands. There is no solution because there is no problem. So it’s going to fester on and on.

Our brand is our reputation, which is built upon our stories and expertise, and our willingness to share our knowledge. In today’s socially connected world our reputations have become global, making our brand more important than ever.
Here are 6 ways you can share your valuable knowledge with others and become known as an expert in your field:
- Become Social. Tweet and retweet in your area of expertise, share relevant articles, white papers or videos from other experts in your field, and consider developing a Facebook business page for your expertise. Be sure to credit the original sources of content you share. Answer questions from followers, start conversations, share tips and do so consistently and you will soon be a trusted source of information in your field.
- Speak. Look for a trade association meeting, industry conference, convention or Webinars in your field and look for opportunities to speak. You can submit to be a panelist or make a presentation at workshops. No matter what your field, there’s likely a circle of influence you can tap into for connections and leads. Make sure you write up a speaker’s page on your Website, highlighting the topics you speak about. Include your speaking expertise on LinkedIn and join forums to look for other ways to network.
- Write a blog. Writing blogs on a consistent basis is a great way to showcase your knowledge, promote your expertise and develop your brand. Approach your blogs with a perspective of wanting to help people. Use tips and takeaways that are actionable. Blogs also can help you promote your expertise in social media outlets. Another benefit of regularly writing blogs is once you have enough content, you can turn those blogs into a book or e-book.
- Write your book. There’s no better way to share what you are passionate about than to share your own story. A book can be your calling card about who you are, what you do, and most importantly, your expertise.
- Run a workshop or webinar. One of the best ways to become known as an expert in your field is to host a free webinar and help other people. You can share tips and strategies and take questions from callers or questions posted on your Website or through your conference call offering. Not only will you be helping people, but you can also promote your website, your social media sites, your book and your blog — your expertise.
- Network online and offline. There is so much attention given to online networking, we forget how important it is to see people Face2Face. It is still one of the best ways to make meaningful connections. Keep your eye out for conferences related to your expertise and attend. Conferences provide you with the opportunity to network, connect with other people, get referrals and expand your network. You can promote yourself and your expertise with your business cards and by following up after the conference is over. Remember to connect with your new “friends” on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ or/and LinkedIn.
With a little bit of focused effort, a plan and time, you can become known as an expert in your space.
